Coalition Members Joined Secretary Sebelius for Private "State of Women's Health" Gathering

On Thursday, January 26, Coalition members joined Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius for an intimate conversation about the positive impact the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has had in the lives of women like Robyn Martin.  Martin, mother of 5-month old Jax who suffers from a life-threatening genetic disorder, says that removal of lifetime insurance coverage caps under the ACA has been a relief to her family. More than 100 people attended the Coalition's forum on January 23, to learn more about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), its impact on Maryland families, and what to watch for in the 2012 General Assembly.  Speakers for the educational forum, partially funded by the National Women's Law Center, included:

  • Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
  • Carolyn Quattrocki, Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Health Care Reform (Presentation)
  • Judy Waxman, Vice President of Health and Reproductive Rights, National Women's Law Center (Presentation)
  • Jennifer Goldberg, Member of the Maryland Health Benefits Exchange Board

The attendees then received tips on effective advocacy from Delegates Shirley Nathan-Pulliam and Ariana Kelly, and Jeremy Crandall of Delegate Heather Mizeur's office.

Coalition Chair, Leni Preston, and Robyn Elliott of Public Policy Partners, concluded the day with tips on how to talk to legislators, a discussion of the legislative process and this year's Health Benefit Exchange Act of 2012 (SB238). Learn more about the issues the Coalition will be tracking.
