HB1391 - The Kids First Act.

Cover All Kids Logo

It is time for Maryland to take care of its uninsured children. 140,000 kids in our state do not have access to the care they need to be healthy, happy and productive. Of these, 90,000 are currently eligible for, but not enrolled in public programs (Maryland Children's Health Program - MCHP - and Medicaid).

The bill has good momentum in the House and is expected to make it to the Senate early next week. Now is the time to tell your Senators and particularly those that serve on the Finance and Budget and Taxation Committees that you want to see this legislation pass this year.

With HB1391:

  • Parents will be asked to check off on their tax returns whether or not their child has health insurance.
  • Families with incomes below 300% of the federal poverty level whose children are uninsured will receive enrollment forms for MCHP or Medicaid.
  • A Commission will be formed to study options and develop recommendations for creating affordable health coverage packages for families earning more than 300% of the federal poverty level.

DON'T DELAY - HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!
  • If your Senator is a member of the Finance or Budget and Taxation Committee - see below for a complete list - contact them immediately and let them know they should support the Kids First Act - HB1391.
  • If your Senator is not a member of these Committees it is still essential that they hear from you. Email now.
  • If you don't know what District you are in, click here

When you make your call or send an email:

  • Identify yourself as a member of the Maryland Women's Coalition for Health Care Reform from District _____ in _____ County.
  • Encourage your Senator to support expansion of health care to Maryland children who don't have insurance by supporting the Kids First Act - HB1391.
  • Tell them that, as the wealthiest state in the nation, Maryland must do better for our kids: that the legislature has already committed to providing health care to 90,000 kids and now is the time to fulfill that promise.
  • If you have a personal story please be sure to share it with your senator
  • Thank them
